Safety switch won't stay on?

Don't keep resetting it. Ring us — it's a circuit leaking to earth and it can be isolated properly in one visit.

The usual calls

What Narre Warren rings us about

Narre Warren was built out hard through the late eighties and nineties, and that era left a very specific electrical fingerprint behind. Most of the calls we get from these streets are the same five problems, and they all trace back to how the boards were built at the time.

One safety switch for the whole house

Boards of that era typically have a single shared RCD across every power circuit. One failing appliance or one wet outdoor outlet drops the lot. It isn't a faulty safety switch — it's doing its job on a board that was never split up properly.

Nothing protecting the lights

Lighting circuits on those boards were often left with no RCD at all. Changing a light fitting or a fan in the roof space is the exact job where that matters most.

A board that's run out of room

Aircon, then a second oven, then the car. Twenty-four ways looked generous in 1994. Adding anything now means extending the board, adding a sub-board, or using load management instead of more supply.

Nineties downlights and transformers

Halogen downlights, the transformers above them, and insulation that's been pushed back over the top. We get called to flickering, dead circuits and burnt terminals that all come back to the same roof space.

Outdoor power that's taken water

Thirty-year-old external outlets, pergola lighting, pool and spa gear, and garden lights with joints buried in a damp pit. Reliable cause of nuisance tripping after a wet week.

Rentals with no record on file

Narre Warren carries heavy rental density, and the two-yearly electrical safety check applies to every Victorian rental agreement, whenever the tenancy started. Plenty have never had one.

If it's the safety switch that brought you here, there's a longer walk-through of how to narrow it down yourself before you ring anyone: why does my safety switch keep tripping.

The permanent fix

An RCBO per circuit, instead of one switch for everything

The repair-it-again approach on a nineties board costs more over five years than replacing it once. Here's what we actually do, and why it stops the recurring call-outs.

  • One RCBO per circuit — a fault takes out that circuit and nothing else, so you keep the fridge and the lights
  • Lighting circuits protected too, not just power
  • Every circuit traced and labelled — we identify them, rather than copying the faded sticker
  • Spare ways left on purpose for the EV charger, the battery, the aircon or the shed
  • Consumer mains assessed at the same time — a new board on tired mains is half a job
  • Prescribed work independently inspected and a Certificate of Electrical Safety issued

The acreage side is a different job entirely

Narre Warren North isn't the estates. Bigger blocks, private poles, overhead supply, sheds a long way from the house, pumps, and gear that was installed by whoever owned the place in 1988. Most suburban electricians quote it like a suburban job and then discover the run is 80 metres.

  • Sub-mains sized for voltage drop, not just for current — which is why underdone shed supplies work until the welder goes on
  • Private poles and points of attachment — condition, height, and whose responsibility they are
  • Shed and workshop boards with their own protection, so a fault out there doesn't take the house down
  • Pumps, tanks, gates and irrigation wired to survive weather and rodents
  • Single to three-phase upgrades where the shed or the machinery genuinely needs it — and we'll tell you when it doesn't
Everything else

What else we do in Narre Warren

EV chargers

Tesla Wall Connector, myenergi Zappi and the mainstream 7 kW units. Supply checked before we quote, load management used before we recommend a mains upgrade. Will you need a board upgrade?

Home batteries

Battery retrofit to existing solar, backup circuits on a sub-board, and a straight answer on whether it stacks up for your usage. Electricians, not solar salespeople.

Fault finding

Dead circuits, hot or buzzing switches, flickering on one circuit, burnt terminals. Insulation resistance and leakage measured, not parts swapped and fingers crossed.

Renovations & lighting

Nineties halogen downlights swapped out properly, kitchen and bathroom circuits, extra power points, outdoor and alfresco. Rough-in and fit-off for extensions.

Rental safety checks

Two-yearly checks to AS/NZS 3019, tenant access arranged by us, record emailed the same day, repairs quoted separately for the owner to approve.

Commercial

Shop and office fitouts around Fountain Gate and the Narre Warren business area, lighting upgrades, distribution boards, three-phase equipment and maintenance.

Narre Warren questions

How fast can you get to Narre Warren?

Narre Warren is core service area. We're based in Pakenham, about 20 km east along the highway, so same or next day is normal for booked work and a fault can often be looked at the same day. Ring rather than email if you've lost power — the phone gets answered by the electrician.

Why does my safety switch keep tripping?

In Narre Warren it's usually one shared RCD covering every power circuit in the house, which is how boards of the late eighties and nineties were built. One failing appliance or one wet outdoor outlet then takes out the whole house. We isolate which circuit is leaking rather than guessing, and the permanent fix is an RCBO per circuit so a fault takes out one circuit instead of everything. Longer explanation here: why safety switches trip.

Do you work on acreage at Narre Warren North?

Yes. Narre Warren North is a different job to the estates: larger blocks, private poles, overhead supply, long sub-mains runs to sheds, workshops and pumps. Long runs have to be sized for voltage drop rather than just for current, which is where most undersized shed supplies come unstuck.

Can you install an EV charger if my board is full?

Usually yes. A full board is a capacity problem, not a safety problem. Depending on what's in there we extend the board, add a sub-board, or fit a charger with load management so it backs off when the house is drawing hard. Load management is often what avoids a consumer mains upgrade entirely.

Is my 1990s switchboard worth upgrading or just repairing?

If it has one shared RCD, no RCD on the lighting circuits, or no spare ways left, repairing it piecemeal is usually money spent twice. Replacing it once with an RCBO per circuit, proper labelling and deliberate spare capacity costs less than a repair now, a way for the EV charger next year and a sub-board for the battery after that. What changes the price.

Do you do rental electrical safety checks in Narre Warren?

Yes. Every residential rental agreement in Victoria needs an electrical safety check every two years, whenever the tenancy started. We do the check to AS/NZS 3019, arrange tenant access ourselves, email the compliance record the same day and quote any repairs separately. Several Narre Warren properties in one run costs less per property.

Which parts of Narre Warren do you cover?

Narre Warren, Narre Warren South and Narre Warren North, plus Fountain Gate, Hallam, Hampton Park and Lysterfield South on the same runs. Berwick, Beaconsfield and Officer are the same trip for us.

Do you charge a call-out fee?

The price is agreed before we start and the travel is in it. No separate call-out line on the invoice afterwards, and no hourly meter running while we diagnose.
